The windshield shattered on impact.

I did not so much resent the shatter as I did the thousand tiny fragments of shrapnel that embedded in my face and neck and chest.

It wasn’t until decades later, after angry red pointillism scars faded to a pale pink blush, that I noticed the rose, petals unfurled in full bloom, tattooed across the surface of my skin.
