With the polar vortex making news headlines, I thought today seemed like a good day to share my family’s favorite recipe for hot cocoa. What better way to spend a chilly evening than curled up on the couch with a blanket, a good book, and a steaming mug of chocolate!
Favorite Hot Cocoa
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 2/3 cup hot water
- 8 cups (1/2 gallon) whole milk (Sure, you can use skim milk, but why?)
- splash of vanilla
- pinch of ground cayenne pepper (optional)
- whipped cream, nutmeg or cinnamon (optional)
In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa and salt. Whisk in the hot water until blended. On medium heat on stove, continue to whisk until mixture is bubbly. Slowly stir in milk and continue to heat until warm throughout – don’t boil! Add vanilla and cayenne. Serve in a mug, topped with whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and then reheated.
