I LOVE WRITING!

Merry Hill Brown:  “Why do I write? For mornings like today. I’m nearing the end of the third book in my Four Families series and just figured out what’s really going on with a major story line, spanning all three books…Why do I write? The process of discovery is absolutely amazing…I’m grateful I get to experience this kind of genuine surprise. I LOVE WRITING!” (https://www.facebook.com/MerryBrownBooks/?fref=ts)

Muse (noun):  any of the nine sister goddesses in Greek mythology presiding over song and poetry and the arts and sciences; a source of inspiration (www.merriam-webster.com)

Perhaps you have heard a writer exclaim, “The muses are with me!” Or, maybe you’ve heard the more modern turn of phrase: “I’m in the zone!”

Both expressions communicate the same excitement:  “I’m working on this great idea for a story, and the words are simply pouring onto the page. I feel like I can’t write fast enough. This story line is developing magically before my eyes!”

For a writer, being “in the zone” feels like galloping bareback across unspoiled prairie in the midst of a herd of wild mustangs:  Exhilarating!

Time becomes meaningless. Normal daily activities are neglected. While “in the zone” myself, I have burned biscuits, missed appointments, and lived on Cheerios and black coffee while typing feverishly late into the night.

An acquaintance once commented to me, “It must be fun to be a writer, because you can create characters and make them do whatever you want.”

Well, almost.

Yes, I enjoy creating characters, but even more fun is when those characters take on voices and lives of their own, when they begin telling the story themselves.  I don’ t make the characters do whatever I want; rather, the characters act of their own volition, and I become not so much a writer as a stenographer.

And the most fun of all? When those same characters invite me deeper into their stories and show me secret twists and interwoven plot lines which I had no idea existed way back at Chapter 1, page 1. The thrill of such a discovery is positively intoxicating.

I agree with Merry Hill Brown:

Why do I write? The process of discovery is absolutely amazing!

    Hey Camille!

Great stuff. For me, being “in the zone” meant not wanting to budge from my chair, except to grab a snack or a caffeinated beverage. 🙂
By the way, I’m a budding writer and since I’m just starting out, I don’t have a lot of people to connect with yet. I was hoping you could also drop by my site and leave a short and sweet comment if you like my writing.

    Thanks!
Cheers to all of us writers!
